What many might not know is that before holding one of the most influential positions in American politics, Speaker Johnson walked a different path—one that started with selling educational products door-to-door while in college.

During his college years at Louisiana State University from 1991 to 1994, Speaker Johnson participated in the Southwestern Advantage sales and leadership program. Reflecting on his journey, Speaker Johnson shared, “As the son of a firefighter, and like many middle-class Americans, I had to work my way through school as I became the first in my family to attend college. The Southwestern Advantage program provided me with an opportunity to learn invaluable skills that I needed to succeed in school and in my career.”

For over 150 years, Southwestern Advantage has been offering students a platform to alleviate educational expenses, acquire practical experience, and develop character by managing their own business ventures.

Speaker Mike Johnson’s ascent to the Speaker’s chair is a testament to the skills that the Southwestern Advantage program can give its alumni. Elected unanimously by his House Republican colleagues on October 25, 2023, Johnson proudly represents Louisiana’s Fourth District. His initial victory in Congress on December 10, 2016, marked the largest margin of victory in his region in over 50 years. Currently serving his fourth term, Speaker Johnson continues to make his mark on the national stage.
